Book Reading #33: Coming of Age in Samoa Microblog

Reference Information
Title: Coming of Age in Samoa
   Author: Margaret Mead
Editors: Williams Morrow and Company (1928)

Chapter 11: The Girl in Conflict (7 pages)
Summary
Mead focuses on the girls that were not a part of a special group because of their desire to be less traditional or are "delinquents". Sona, Ana and Lita all desired to have more choices and did not really have any conflicts with their families. Lola and Mala however, did have family conflicts. Lola was very quarrelsome and following a love affair, called her main rival a thief. Only her mother would accept her after the incident. Mala stole someone's toy and was branded a theif. The Samoans have such an open household that they did not want her around.

Discussion
Even though they are such a primitive group, it is interesting to see that they still share all of the same prejudices and feelings that we Americans do. It's why Shakespeare's work has stood the test of time.
